Following up on last time, we're diving into another case study worth your attention. Today's feature: a hotel in Washington, D.C., the nation's capital.
D.C. is one of those iconic cities where American history and tradition are on full display — so tourists flock there year-round. Naturally, the city is packed with hotels catering to every kind of traveler.
The hotel I'm spotlighting stands out from the crowd — and not just because it's surrounded by Hiltons, Marriotts, and Sheratons (those global chains are everywhere, and you already know what you're getting). This one has a story worth telling.
It's the Kellogg Conference Hotel.
The Kellogg Conference Hotel: Inside a University Campus
Even if you've been to D.C., you've probably never heard of the Kellogg Conference Hotel. It sits about 5 kilometers northeast of downtown, tucked away from the tourist trail. There are no major landmarks nearby, and the area gets sketchy after dark — so it's rarely on travelers' radars.

Here's the thing: the Kellogg Conference Hotel sits inside a university campus. Specifically, Gallaudet University.
During your stay, you get to explore a beautiful college campus like this.
It was a Sunday when I arrived. Campus was empty. American universities sprawl across massive grounds, so finding the hotel took some wandering. Eventually I spotted a student and asked for directions. Maybe my English was rough, but they didn't seem to understand me. After some awkward back-and-forth, I finally found the place. Here's what it looked like:
The exterior blended right in with the other campus buildings. Inside, the vibe was less "boutique hotel," more "corporate training center." My guess? The hotel was built for seminars, workshops, and academic conferences — somewhere attendees could crash between sessions. Hence "Conference" in the name.
The room itself was simple and spotless.

The hotel itself? Nothing flashy. But — as I mentioned — the real draw is the campus experience. I decided to grab breakfast at the student cafeteria to soak in the college atmosphere.
When I got down to the lobby, students were gathered for some kind of event. They kept chanting something, but I couldn't make it out. I walked over to the event desk — and that's when I learned what Gallaudet University actually is.
It's a university for the Deaf and hard of hearing. That's why the student I'd asked for directions the day before couldn't understand me. They were Deaf.
This is the Two Queen Bed Room I stayed in.
I did some digging. Gallaudet is the world's only comprehensive university for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Founded in 1864 — the same era Abraham Lincoln was pushing for the abolition of slavery. A place with serious history.
Once I understood the context, the building's design made total sense. Because students communicate visually, not through sound, the interior and exterior spaces are extremely open. The student union had glass walls so people could see each other from inside and out, and the atrium connected two floors so you could make eye contact across levels.
Most students are Deaf, and about half the faculty and staff are too. Here, sign language is the primary language. I bought a burger and a drink from the cafeteria and sat down. Around me, students were having animated conversations — without a single spoken word.
It was surreal. A space full of people moving, laughing, debating — and total silence.
I only stayed one night, but Gallaudet's beautiful campus and vibrant student life left a lasting impression. If I ever go back to D.C., I'll book the Kellogg Conference Hotel again without hesitation.
